Meeting the mayor's aide

An editorial.

By Frank Giron

Never having been to City Hall, getting the chance to go is an experience that I will not forget because it is the place that runs the city where I live. Not only did I go to City Hall, but I also got a chance to hear Mayor Villaraigosa’s plans for improving the school system. We as interns had our voices heard. I do not live near most of my fellow interns, but the things I heard that were going on in their schools shocked me. I live in Winnetka and I attend William Howard Taft High School in Woodland Hills, and the way that things are run in the schools of my fellow interns is very different from mine. For example, we don’t experience the type of rotations of teachers and counselors that occur in those other schools.

The most exciting thing about the trip to City Hall was the long and important discussion that we had with one of Villaraigosa’s officials, Marcus Castain. Our conversation with him was very important to me because I want to see something done about the school system that I am a part of. To start, LAUSD is in terrible shape right now. It is overcrowded – with students that want to achieve success in life, students that work hard, and students that just don’t care. I see that it is really up to the students to do something quickly. We as students should be more involved in what concerns us, and that is education. Education is one of the keys to having a great future, and the way the system is working right now, it will not heal for decades to come. I am going to try to spread the word to my fellow schoolmates and see what else can be done.
